Watford were the first team to be relegated followed by Charlton. Then there was a tense final day survival battle between Sheffield United, West Ham and Wigan. West Ham achieved the Great Escape by winning at Old Trafford, and Wigan won a thrilling game at Bramall Lane to ensure their survival and in the process send Sheffield United back to the Championship.
